Friends,
The news for the Brendokenfest Championships event is
not good. I am sorry to announce that after much
consideration and a discussion with Baron Alexander
and Baroness Catriona that Zaliha and I are canceling
the event. I would like to take the time to explain
why this decision was made so that you all can
understand that this was no easy choice. With events
and demos being held during the month of September we
were given the option of going up against a major demo
on the 2nd and none of the sites I found could give us
the 9th. Rivenvale holds an annual event on the 16th.
This left us with the 23rd. We set up the date with
the Smithville Methodist Church, had a check cut
(which has been returned to the exchequer) and
contacted the Pale to have the event listed. We were
informed by the Pale that the the last full weekend in
September is reserved by a new Kingdom law for
Coronation - no other events that had not been listed
prior to the reading of the law in March could be
placed in the Pale and by Middle Kingdom Law an event
not listed in the Pale can not be a SCA sanctioned
event and will not be covered by SCA insurance. I was
originally lead to believe that this law did not go
into effect till the first of the year but it proves
that I was incorrect. It should be noted that
Coronation has not yet been listed for the
aforementioned date on the Kingdom calendar.
With this new hurdle we decided that we would make the
attempt to hold the event on the final Saturday of the
month, September 30 and take the risk of going up
against the Red Dragon event in Tirnewydd (Columbus).
This was a far from optimal date. Red Dragon is a
major fighting event and many of the best fighters
will be attending. I was informed this late this week
that this is also the Regional Rapier Tournament and
is a very big draw to the Rapier folks. With these
facts in mind and the simple truth that we are playing
a guessing game with the weather that would very
strongly affect the Archery and thrown weapons if it
is poor, Zalhia and I with a discussion with their
Excellencies felt that this was to big a risk to take
with the Baronies money, The chances of recouping our
initial investment had diminished below a level we
felt was reasonable. The month of October had many of
the same problems as September plus the weather is
even more chancy. This decision was not easy and we
feel that we have let you all down, but we also felt
that we could not just play with the Barony's money
and risk a poor event.
We have yet to determine how we are going to handle
the Championships this year; if anyone has some ideas
as to this please post it and we can all see what we
want to do.
I am very sorry that this has come to this.
